How to caring for your Engineered Stone Bench Top

What is Engineered Stone?

Your engineered stone bench top comprises around 90-95% quartz. Quartz is one of the hardest elements in nature which is what gives your bench its hard wearing characteristics. The quartz and binding agents are manufactured into slabs using patented technology.

How do I maintain my bench?

Engineered stones are non-porous which makes them hygienic and essentially stain resistant. The bench should be cleaned regularly with warm soapy water or a mild detergent using a damp cloth or sponge. Good quality spray and wipe type products are fine to use however harsh cleaners should be avoided. Do not use abrasive cloths or cleaning products (such as Jif) as these can cause scratching or leave dull spots. The bench will withstand liquids such as wine, vinegar, lemon juice, tea and spices although these should be wiped away as soon as practical. Should you find yourself with a stubborn mark, we have cleaners and micro-pore cloths available. These are however very rarely required for maintenance. As the bench is non-porous, unlike granite, sealing is not required.

Heat Resistance

Engineered stone benches are resistant to moderately high temperatures for a brief time. However prolonged exposure to high heat can cause discoloration or cracking from thermal shock. We therefore recommend hot pots and pans should not be placed directly from the stove, microwave or hob onto the bench.
